Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid is in a Las Vegas hospital following injuries sustained while exercising at home.
A statement issued Friday by Reid’s office said doctors expect a “full recovery.”
“A piece of equipment Senator Reid was using to exercise broke, causing him to fall and break a number of ribs and bones in his face,” according to the statement. “Senator Reid will return to Washington this weekend and be in the office Tuesday as the Senate prepares to reconvene.”
Reid, 75, will be minority leader and guide fewer Democrats when the 114th Congress is sworn in Jan. 6.
Reid’s security detail first brought him to St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Henderson, Nev., after the accident occurred Thursday. He was transferred to University Medical Center in Las Vegas for further testing and was admitted overnight “as a precaution,” the senator’s office said.
Reid has had several mishaps and hospital stays in recent years. He dislocated his shoulder while jogging in Washington in 2011, leaving him with a bump on the head and a black eye.
In 2012, the Democratic leader was involved in a multiple-car accident in Las Vegas, suffering rib and hip contusions. Reid had a brief stay in a Washington hospital in 2013 after experiencing exhaustion.
